Rubbish

"But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ,"
Philippians 3:7-8

Paul speaks of a personal experience to the topic of being worldly. Paul gave up everything to follow Christ. Like the disciple who followed Jesus we too need to have a willing attitude toward God. Do you count everything as "rubbish" in comparison to Christ? Everything?

  1. The greek word "scubala" used in this verse is rendered very politely in most modern translations. The word is rendered in the KJV closer to the context of the verses as it is rendered "dung" Some render it as "rubbish", "garbage" "next to nothing" but the context of the passage sure seems to demand something less polite than those words. Paul was not being polite and thus the KJV got this one right. "Yea doubtless, and I count all things [but] loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them [but] dung, that I may win Christ,". The verse makes so much more sense. So all of the fleshly things we do, including every single accomplishment is worth "dung" compared to CHRIST!
